Excerpt:

The mattress moaned slightly in response to an unseen and unexpected movement. Her eyes snapped open and focused on the room, moving up, down, side-to-side. She didn’t recognize a single thing in her line of view. A rush of air flooded her lungs in a panicked gasp. She wasn’t where she should be.

In her own bed.

Alone.

Damn. Where am I and how did I end up here? Double damn.

Her last memory? The bar. Jed’s Place. She’d received a tip from her source that her suspect had slithered inside. Arriving a few minutes later, she kept an eye on him and his cohorts for a couple of hours. Posing as a customer, she shot a couple of games of eight ball with some of the regulars.

Her eyes narrowed. Her head pounded as she recalled the next events.

Nothing stood out until . . . the asshole from the pool table sidled up way too close behind her and tried to score points by offering shooting tips. She stretched up on her tiptoes to line up the winning shot. His groin pressed tight against her bottom. His hands slid down her arms to her wrists as he whispered, “Let me give you a hand there, little lady.”

Without flinching, she purred, “I’m not little, I’m nobody’s lady, and I don’t need your help.” She slammed the butt end of the cue stick into his ribs, and with the same smooth motion came back to make a perfect shot and win her third game of the night. She straightened from the table with a satisfied grin.

Okay, the girl can take care of herself, right? Check this out!

Rose heard the unmistakable sound of duct tape stripping from its roll. Her hands, bound together behind her back and another piece loosely secured the bag around her neck. Her memory of stored scents identified Mabel and Stan even before they spoke.

“Take her to the lab. I’ll stash her car.” Mabel’s footsteps hurried away. As soon as the front door close behind Mabel, Rose stiffened her body and formed an impossible to move statue. Her arms flexed and ripped the tape to separate her hands. Stan grabbed for her to regain his grip. She spun around to deliver a kick toward the sound of his astonished breathing. He collided with the floor and skidded to a stop when he smacked into the cabinet doors. As he scrambled to right himself, the knives rattled in the butcher block on the kitchen counter.

She ripped the tape from around her neck and yanked the pillowcase off her head in time to see the man lunge toward her. She side stepped his attack.

Yep! Looks like she can hold her own in a sticky situation.

“It seems to me, Mr. Brown, you are taking advantage of this whole situation. What was the big idea with that move back in the office?” She pressed closer to his body and slid her hands around his waist. Two could play this game. She’d never admit how she responded to his touch but she could damn well enjoy it while it lasted.

“We never identified ourselves as PI’s, so I figured it best for that detail to stay confidential. We may not seem as threatening if we’re just concerned family in search of our poor, lost, little lamb.”

His lips brushed hers as he continued and Rose almost lost her last ounce of control. The muscles low in her stomach clinched. A vision of a deepened kiss, less clothing, and her legs locked around his waist skated through her mind.

Wait. She blinked several times to bring herself back to reality. She couldn’t give in to the urges pulsing through her body. She had to focus on the job. She drew in a calming breath. “Um, have you found out where he is?”

He kept his attention on her and with a sly smile creeping across his face, nodded slowly. “He’s gone.”

“How long have you known this?” She inhaled again and filled her lungs. His scent was light spice, one now, forever embedded in her memory.

Uh oh! Will she survive this?
